Rug Sizes: The Rule Nobody Tells You

Why the rug you bought looks wrong, and what size to buy instead.

Almost every rug problem is a size problem. People buy the rug they can afford, which is usually 5x7 or 6x9, float it in the middle of the room with no furniture on it, and the room reads cheaper than it did with bare floor. That is not the rug's fault.

The rule

At minimum, the front legs of every seat should sit on the rug. That is the line between a rug that anchors a room and a rug that looks like a bath mat. If all four legs fit, better. If nothing touches it, you have bought a very expensive place mat.

In practice, for a standard living room with a sofa and two chairs, that means 8x10 at the smallest and 9x12 more often than people expect. Measure the seating arrangement, not the room.

Living room

Sutley Abstract Rug, 9ft 2in x 12ft

Sutley Abstract Rug, 9ft 2in x 12ft

Faded blue and sand watercolour. Big enough to sit all the furniture on, which is what makes a room look designed.

$343.99

Nine by twelve covers a full seating group and leaves a border of floor, which is what you want — the floor showing at the edges is what makes the rug read as intentional.

Albion Oriental Rug, 7ft 6in x 9ft 6in

Albion Oriental Rug, 7ft 6in x 9ft 6in

Faded green and ivory medallion that looks a hundred years old. Stain-resistant, low pile, takes traffic.

$155.99 $535

A faded medallion does something a solid cannot: it hides everything. If the room has traffic, pets or children, a busy vintage-look pattern is the practical choice as well as the pretty one.

Under a dining table

Different rule here. The rug must extend at least twenty-four inches past the table edge on all sides, because a chair has to be able to slide back without catching. For most rectangular tables that is 8x10 minimum.

Hagel Abstract Rug, 6ft 7in x 9ft 6in

Hagel Abstract Rug, 6ft 7in x 9ft 6in

Gold and bone abstract with fringe. High-low pile, so it reads like wool and cleans like polyester.

$209.99

Outdoors

Same size rule, different material. Polypropylene flatweaves hose clean and survive sun; anything with a pile will hold water.

Lucidia Indoor/Outdoor Rug, 9x12

Lucidia Indoor/Outdoor Rug, 9x12

Hoses clean, survives sun, and reads like a real flatweave. The piece that makes a patio a room.

$349.99 $598
Natural Weave Outdoor Rug, 8x10

Natural Weave Outdoor Rug, 8x10

Hoses clean, takes full sun, and makes a concrete patio read as an actual room.

$160.31

The short version

Measure your furniture group, add a foot on each side, and buy the next size up from whatever that gives you. It is nearly always bigger than instinct says, and it is nearly always the reason a room that should work does not.
